1997 Soil Erosion Rates

Statewide estimated average annual sheet and rill erosion rates on cultivated cropland, as estimated by the Universal Soil Loss Equation (USLE), show a slight decline in 1997. The trend has been downward from a high of 2.6 tons/acre/year in 1982 to the current estimate of 2.1 tons/acre/year.


 

Statewide estimated average annual wind erosion rates on cultivated cropland, as estimated by the Wind Erosion Equation (WEQ), show a significant decline in 1997. The current wind erosion rate is 5.8, slightly below the 1982 rate of 5.9 tons/acre/year, following an increase to 6.7 in 1987.
