Conservation Planning
National NRCS 3 part (9 module) course on conservation planning basics.
- Part 1 or equivalent training is comprised of 5 self-paced modules.
- Part 2 is comprised on 3 modules delivered in classroom and field
exercises over a 4 day period.
- Part 3 is the development of an actual conservation plan.
Introduction to the Field Office Technical Guide
National NRCS web-based 5 module 4 hour introduction to the primary
technical reference for NRCS conservation work. Completion of this course
will become a requirement for individuals requesting TSP certification.
Agricultural Waste Management Systems-A Primer
National NRCS course comprised of self-paced booklet. Very basic and short.
Required for engineers who are asking for TSP certification for design of waste
storage and handling systems under the “Experience” option.
Agricultural Waste Management Systems-Level 2
National NRCS computer based 22 module training packaged as a CD and
a workbook. Required for engineers who are asking for TSP certification for
design of waste storage and handling systems under the “Experience” option.
Introduction to Water Quality
National NRCS 12 module course on water quality basics. Students are sent
workbooks and videos to study and prepare for an on-line test.
Nutrient and Pest Management Considerations in Conservation Planning
Separate National NRCS courses (Tracks) for Nutrient Management and Pest
Management. Each course or track is divided into 3 parts: modular self paced
studies; 12-16 hour in-state facilitated classroom training; and preparation of
a plan. Parts I and II or equivalent training are required for individuals
requesting TSP certification for Organic and Inorganic Nutrient Management or
for Pest Management.
- Part
I of the Nutrient Management Track (Modules 1-6) Students review materials
on-line or down load materials and review.
- Part II, the facilitated in-state classroom training, addresses
components of nutrient management planning on a “case” farm. Part II is
considered module 7. Students are given short lectures followed by exercises
such as determining University of Minnesota fertilizer recommendations or
determining sensitive areas and sensitive area management practices.
Facilitated training is currently offered upon request after an adequate
number of requests are received. Classes range from 12-16 hours.
- Part III consists of developing a nutrient management plan that
meets NRCS standards and guidelines. The plan is reviewed and commented on
by NRCS facilitators.

Nutrient Management. Version 1.1. Feb. 2001
USDA-NRCS CD-ROM self paced study. Basic information on nutrient management and
NRCS procedures and policies. Limited quantities of the CD-ROM are available
upon request from the NRCS Minnesota State Office in St. Paul.
Crop Nutrient Planning and Manure Management-Training Guide
for Minnesota
CD-ROM developed for trainers but can be used by students. Covers
University of Minnesota fertilizer recommendations, soil testing, applicator
calibration, determining nutrient credits and N and P BMPs. Also available as a
training manual and slide set.

Orientation to NRCS Policies and Standards
In State facilitated 6-7 hour orientation session for Technical Service
Providers in Minnesota. Provides a detailed overview of NRCS policies and
standards including:
- National and Minnesota NRCS Nutrient Management Planning Policies
- Minn. NRCS Conservation Practice Standards (590) Nutrient Management and
(633) Waste Utilization
- Cost-share requirements for nutrient and pest management
- Inventorying Sensitive Areas
