Description of Watershed

The total estimated area in the watershed is 457,800 acres. This watershed is located in Lyon, Murray, Pipestone, Redwood and Yellow Medicine Counties in Southwest Minnesota.

The land uses in the watershed are primarily cropland and pastureland. The watershed area is a combination of the Rolling Till Prairie and the Central Minnesota Till Prairies resource areas. The topography is nearly level to gently rolling with many depressions and drainages. Steeper slopes are on the sides of drainage ways. Soils are deep, medium textured to moderately fine textured. Upland soils are typically well drained or moderately well drained. Poorly drained soils occur in depressed areas.

In the cropland areas of the watershed, there are about 960 farms. Cropland is the major landuse, covering 323,800 acres. Corn and soybeans are the primary crops. Other crops include sugar beets and small grains.

Pastureland in the watershed comprises about 46,100 acres.  Much of the pastureland in this watershed is located in rough and stony areas. Most of these pastures are overgrazed. The primary forage species are Kentucky bluegrass and white clover. When managed with prescribed grazing other cool season species such as timothy, smooth bromegrass, and quackgrass express themselves. A significant amount of the pastureland in this watershed contain native cool and warm season grasses.

A few of producers have improved their pastures or converted cropland to pastures for stocker operations. These pastures are often improved cool season grasses along with legumes such as alfalfa or various clover species.
