Description of Watershed

The total estimated area in the watershed is 523,200 acres. This watershed is located in Becker, Otter Tail, Todd and Wadena Counties in Central Minnesota.

The land uses in this watershed consist of cropland, forestland and pastureland. The watershed area is a combination of the Northern Minnesota Gray Drift and the Wisconsin and Minnesota Sandy Outwash resource areas. The topography ranges from rolling glacial moraine and associated outwash with short, choppy, and complex slopes to nearly level and gently rolling outwash plains. The soils are well drained and moderately well drained, nearly level to sloping. Excessively drained soils are on the uplands and organic soils are in depressions.

In the cropland areas of the watershed, there are about 1,200 farms. Cropland covers 193,900 acres. Primary crops include corn, hay and small grains. Other crops include vegetables and potatoes.

Pastureland in the watershed comprises about 68,500 acres.  Most of the pastureland in this watershed is located in wet or stony areas. Most of these pastures are overgrazed. The primary forage species are Kentucky bluegrass and white clover on uplands and reed canarygrass in wet sites. When upland sites are managed with prescribed grazing other species such as timothy, and quackgrass express themselves.

There are a few producers who have improved their pastures or converted cropland to pastures for dairy and stocker operations. These pastures are often improved cool season grasses along with legumes such as alfalfa or various clover species.
