Thief Watershed

Updated 04/10/2008

Description of Watershed

The Thief Watershed is located in Beltrami, Marshall and Pennington Counties in northwest Minnesota.

The Thief Watershed is in the Northern Minnesota Glacial Lake Basins and the Red River Valley of the North.  The topography is nearly level.  In the Glacial Lake Basins, mineral soils are deep and fine to medium textured and moderately well to well drained.  Poorly drained mineral and organic soils are in the lacustrine minerals and wetter depressional areas.  In the Red River Valley, soils are deep, somewhat poorly to poorly drained and sandy to clayey.

The major land uses in the Thief Watershed are cropland, pasture, forest land and recreation land.  The main crops grown are small grains, soybeans, and forage crops.  Wild rice is grown as a specialty crop in Beltrami County.  The pasture land is used primarily for beef and dairy production.  The major resource concerns include wind erosion, doughtiness on sandy soils, water quantity management, pasture management and water quality.  Portions of the Thief Watershed are within the Red Lake Indian Reservation.
