Wright SWCD 2007 Tree Program

Black Walnut

Hardiness Zones: 4

Growth Rate: Slow

Site Requirements: Full to partial sun.  Prefers moist well-drained soils. Does not withstand extended ponding or drought.

Soil: Prefers deep, well-drained loams.

Form: Forked and limby

Height: 35 to 60 feet

Width: 35 to 50 feet

Flower/Fruit: Green husk, until ripening in fall, when it
turns black.

Comments: Excellent for wildlife.  Used for parks and other large landscape areas. Less
suitable for small yards and boulevards because of its
large size and messy fruit.  High valued timber.  Should not be planted with or adjacent to a row of conifers because of toxic substance secreted by roots.
