Prairie Country Resource Conservation &
Development Area (RC&D)
Minnesota

Vision: An economically stable and environmentally
sound area with a good quality of life and opportunities for it's youth.
Mission: Working cooperatively to promote economic,
human, and natural resource development.

What is RC&D?
RC&D, short for Resource Conservation and
Development, is a program that involves local people in identifying and
solving human, economic, and environmental needs in their communities.
RC&D is action directed at accomplishing what is planned and agreed to by
communities and government agencies working together. The RC&D Program can
probably best be described as a Local - Federal Partnership.
Local needs are identified and brought to the Prairie Country RC&D Council
and the United States Department of Agriculture for assistance. Assistance
is provided by many public and private sources under the direction of local
leaders.

What Does Prairie Country RC&D Do?
Prairie Country RC&D can work on any type of
rural development need that the local people agree to, such as creating a park,
renovating a community facility or tourist attraction, promoting an industry,
cleaning up a waterway, etc. All kinds of economic and natural resource
development opportunities exist and are being promoted throughout the Prairie
Country Area via the RC&D Program.

What Assistance Does RC&D Provide?
Once a need is identified, RC&D works as a
consultant to provide assistance to the local people. The type of
assistance depends on the type of project and may include plan development or
technical, informational, and educational activities; grant writing; and
administrative support. RC&Ds partner with the private sector,
corporations, foundations, and all levels of government to secure assistance for
projects. The Prairie Country RC&D assists individuals, groups, and
organizations in the nine-county area of Big Stone, Chippewa, Kandiyohi, Lac qui
Parle, McLeod, Meeker, Renville, Swift, and Yellow Medicine.

Who Is Involved in RC&D?
The Prairie Country RC&D Area is sponsored locally by Soil
& Water Conservation Districts and County Boards of Commissioners. The
people on these Boards are your local contacts. Representatives from each
of these organizations make up a Council that provides local direction for the
Prairie Country RC&D Program. RC&D is a "People's Program" devoted to
meeting local people's needs. The RC&D purpose is to be a means of helping
people achieve their goals. The project is not an "RC&D project" in the
sense that RC&D does everything. Local leadership and support are
necessary elements for successful projects. The greatest strength of the
RC&D Program is in local people working together to solve their own problems.
