  • Bagley Youth Hockey Community Addition - The Bagley Youth Hockey Association raised funds to build new locker rooms for the arena.

  • Biomass Fuel Testing - Giziibii RC&D, partnering with Pembina Trail RC&D, has been requested to help coordinate a proposal to NW MN Foundation for fuel testing (excess residues, wood chips, etc.) from various Minnesota participating industries at the Energy & Environmental Research Center’s (EERC) portable biomass gasification power plant. Pembina Trail RC&D was awarded $25,000 from the NW MN Foundation. EERC offered to contribute up to $35,000 of Department Of Energy funding. Several local saw mills are interested in testing their biomass products. Hay may also be tested.

  • Biomass Gasification Pilot - The results from the Biomass Fuel Testing indicated that seed screenings from the Northern Excellent Seed, LLC from Williams, MN produced a high quality syngas. Installation of a 100-kilowatt gasification power plant would allow this producer owned cooperative to use 2 million pounds of biomass waste from processing seed in the generation of electricity.

  • Blackduck Ambulance Association - Giziibii RC&D is assisting with the fund search for a new ambulance that would serve northern Beltrami County.

  • Clearwater Conservation Farm - In 1993, the Clearwater SWCD took over a 437 acre farm. They have removed old buildings and fences and sealed wells. The Clearwater SWCD has successfully applied for funding from a DNR Partnership Grant and has received several additional grants. They have planted several areas in native grasses, and made many other improvements to the farm. Giziibii RC&D has assisted in planning and the preparation of a grant application. Giziibii RC&D continues to forward funding opportunities to the Clearwater SWCD for this project.

  • Clearwater Library - The Clearwater Library Foundation is seeking capital funds to erect a new library building in Bagley, Minnesota. The current library is completely inadequate due to limited library space, lack of sufficient parking, physically-disabled accessibility, and program issues. The Library Foundation has already raised some funds locally and contacted outside foundations for support. GRC&D has provided the Foundation with potential funding sources.

  • Earth Tunnel - This project seeks to increase the awareness and knowledge of youth in the areas of agriculture and natural resource conservation. To accomplish this objective, Giziibii RC&D in partnership with other local agencies is seeking funding to purchase a mobile, hands-on exhibit called an Earth Tunnel. The exhibit provides a realistic, close-up view of a soil profile, complete with vegetation, insects and animal habitats.

  • Eastern Hubbard County Fire Department - Giziibii RC&D assisted the fire department with a Department of Homeland Security grant application for a quick attack fire truck.

  • Grazing Tour 2006 – A grazing tour was held in July for local producers. Over 60 people attended the tour. This project has been completed. There is interest in hosting another grazing tour next year and MARC&D is working on a contribution agreement with NRCS to help fund future tours.

  • Lake George Fire Department–2006 - Giziibii RC&D assisted the Lake George Fire Department with a Department Homeland Security grant application for a quick attack fire truck.

  • Little Elbow Lake Dry Hydrants – Little Elbow Township has requested funding assistance for installing 2 dry hydrants within the township. Surveys requesting interest in additional dry hydrants were mailed out to local fire departments. A statewide dry hydrant project is being considered by the Minnesota Association of RC&D.

  • LOW Erosion Control - The Lake of the Woods SWCD has requested assistance for identifying causes of Lake of the Woods Erosion. The total budget for this project is $215,400.

  • Mahnomen Health Center Landscape Project - will  utilize the skills of Landscape and Architecture class from the North Dakota State University to design a new outdoor living area for residents of the health Center. Giziibii RC&D will also help seek funds to build the patio.

  • Mahnomen Fire Department – Giziibii RC&D wrote a grant application for the Mahnomen Fire Department from the Department of Homeland Security/FEMA. As a result, the City of Mahnomen received a grant of $111,573 for personal protective equipment and training. This project has been completed.

  • Marshall/Beltrami Fire Wise Grant - This was a request that Giziibii RC&D submit a proposal for a Fire Wise project. This project seeks the installation of a dry hydrant, a strategically located fire break and a number of on-site fire risk assessments for landowners.

  • Marshall/Beltrami Water Quality Testing - The Marshall/Beltrami SWCD has requested assistance to fund testing above, at, and below tile drainage sites to evaluate the effect on downstream water quality. The budget for this project is $15,000.

  • Midwest Special Forest Product Network – The Northern Community Forest Network was established to coordinate the harvesting and forest management activities of Minnesota’s traditional loggers and non-traditional, or “special forest products” (SFP) gatherers. The goal of the Network is to facilitate advance notification of harvest activities between primary forest products and specialty forest products industries. Partnering with Giziibii RC&D in the project are MN Extension Service, Goods from the Woods Project, Minnesota Logger Education Program, Balsam Bough Partnership, Woodland Adviser Program, Minnesota Forestry Association Woodland Committees, Minnesota Forest Industries, and Associated Contract Loggers.

  • Midwest Special Forest Products Web Site - Giziibii RC&D has received several grants for this project. The web site can be visited at www.specialforestproducts.com. The site hosts educational resources available for special forest products and covers a multi-state Midwestern region. It also provides buyers and sellers of special forest products with a place to put free ads for products, a bulletin board, a calendar of events and an email group. This site has been used to help promote the annual Goods from the Woods Marketplace that is held each fall. The web site was completely updated this year.

  • Nevis Fire Department - The City of Nevis Fire Department requested assistance to prepare a grant application to the Department of Homeland Security/FEMA. Giziibii RC&D wrote a grant application for the Nevis Fire Department to successfully apply for a $195,601 grant to purchase a pumper truck. This project has been completed.

  • Organizational Effectiveness Implementation – In 2004, Giziibii RC&D worked with the Northwest Minnesota Foundation to complete an organizational assessment to look for areas where Giziibii RC&D could improve and strengthen their organization. Two areas identified were marketing and a diversified funding base. Giziibii RC&D received a grant for $5,000 from the NW MN Foundation to help implement improvement in the areas identified.

  • Oshki-Bawaajigan (Young Dreams) Dance Troupe - Giziibii RC&D received a grant from the North Country Health Services Foundation for $8,820. Oshki-Bawaajigan Dance Troupe is a program for Indians and non-Indians and is designed to help keep youth off drugs and alcohol and in school via the use of traditional Indian song, dance, and lessons taken from the rich Native American culture. A sound system has been purchased for use by the troupe and the group has purchased supplies for making costumes. Several of the dancers have competed at Pow Wows. The dance troupe also performed for the Minnesota Associations annual meeting that was hosted by GRC&D last year. The troupe continues to train and make costumes for young dancers.

  • Park Rapids Century School Baseball Field - Park Rapids Area Schools is requesting financial assistance to add a baseball field to the current recreation area. The budget for this project is $58,200.

  • Park Rapids Health Careers Consortium - The Park Rapids School District would like to expand their curriculum for students expressing interest in the medical field. This program will expose students to various medical professions. It is hoped that rural students, when trained, will return to rural areas and help reduce the shortage of medical professionals in these areas.

  • Park Rapids Water Treatment Facility - The City of Park Rapids has requested assistance to find grants or low interest financing to build a water treatment plant. High nitrates in the city water supply has forced Park Rapids to drill a deeper well to supply quality drinking water to the city. The treatment plant is necessary to remove iron and manganese from the water. The budget for the water treatment facility is $1,100,000.

  • Private Woodland Management - Bemidji Area Forest Advisory Council (BAFAC) identified a need for professional forest management on privately owned lands. Giziibii RC&D has been asked to lead the project with an application for funding from NW MN Foundation and other members of the BAFAC. Area served would be nine counties on NW MN with Pembina Trail RC&D as a partner.

  • SFP Workshops - 2007 - Two workshops will be held for Special Forest Workshops in 2007. Bemidji workshop will be held on April 17, 2007 at Concordia Language Villages and the Ely Workshop will be held at the Grand Ely Lodge in Ely on April 19, 2007. The workshops will focus properly harvesting forest products from state/federal or privately owned land.

  • Swedish Artist - 2006 – Giziibii RC&D has been asked to host an artist from Sweden for two days in September. This would be in coordination with the "Goods from the Woods" event, similar to the Swedish Art Demonstration project that was completed in 2005.

  • Tribal Community Food–2005 – If funded, this project will provide risk management education and information to vegetable growers and other agricultural food producers on the tribal reservations of Leech Lake, Red Lake, and White Earth. The project will conduct outreach efforts to support these producers and possibly expand the number of agricultural producers on the reservations.

  • Wood Stove Change Out Project - Giziibii RC&D is seeking funds to offer incentives to landowners who are willing to destroy polluting woodstoves and install an EPA certified unit.

  • Woodland Advisor Program - Giziibii RC&D will work closely with the Beltrami Woodland Committee to provide training for woodland owners who wish to become “Woodland Advisors”. This program is patterned after the Master Gardener program. This program is on hold pending action by the Beltrami Woodland Committee.
