What is an Envirothon?

An Envirothon is a competitive outdoor, hands-on learning experience for students in grades 9-12. Teams consisting of 4-5 students (from the same school) will compete in the Envirothon. Students will visit six different learning stations covering aquatics, forestry, soil, wildlife, and a current environmental issue, which changes every year. Teams are given a brief presentation at 5 of the 6 stations, and are then asked 20 questions related to the topic. At the sixth station, teams are asked to give a 10 minute oral presentation on the current events topic. They are given the scenario before the actual event, so they may prepare visual aids, and other props to assist their presentation.

What is "Area III"?

For Soil and Water Conservation District purposes, the state of Minnesota is divided into eight different areas. Chisago County is located in Area III, along with the counties of North St. Lewis, South St. Lewis, Lake, Cook, Carlton, Aitkin, Mille Lacs, Kanabec, Pine, and Isanti. All public and private high schools, or home school groups, in these counties are invited to participate in the Envirothon.

Area III will be holding a North and a South event this year, both events will be held on the same date, and both teh North and the South will be able to send the 3 top teams to the State event.

The date and location of the 2008 Area III Envirothon will be on Monday, May 5, 2008, from 9:00am - 1:40pm.  This years' event will be held at Camp Heartland in Willow River, MN.

What happens when a teams wins at the Area level?

The top 3 teams from each of the areas advance on to the State competition. The winner of the State Envirothon will attend the National
Envirothon.
