Rediscover home gardening

Following the lead of First Lady Michelle Obama and US Department of Agriculture Secretary Thomas Vilsack, the staff at the Service Center in Goodhue is establishing a demonstration garden. The purpose is two fold. One is to raise vegetables for the local food shelf. Secondly it will serve as a demonstration for city dwellers and folks who don’t have room for a big garden.

EQIP Ring Dike Initiative Announced

In an effort to improve water quality in flood prone areas, the USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) is targeting a minimum of $2 million in financial assistance through the Environmental Quality Incentives Program (EQIP) for the installation or enhancement of “ring dikes” around farmsteads.

The Farm and Ranch Lands Protection Program (FRPP) has enrolled over 620,000 acres on 3,100 farms and ranches since Congress first authorized the program in 1996.  For further information, contact Tim Koehler, FRPP State Program Manager, at 651-602-7858.

The Farm and Ranch Lands Protection Program Signup

The Farm and Ranch Lands Protection Program (FRPP) administered by the USDA, Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS), will accept applications for funding on a continuous basis. NRCS State Conservationist William Hunt noted that the 2008 Farm Bill provided for a continuous signup to allow eligible entities more opportunities to sign up. Eligible entities must submit applications on or before June 19, 2009 to receive consideration for funding in fiscal year 2009.
